Questions about good news

Is there any good news today?

Yes. Our newest story is New Rice Varieties Resist Bacterial Blight in East Africa. We add checked good news from science, health, clean energy, sports and kindness every day.

Where can I find good news?

Right here: every News Twit story links to its original source, such as a university, a public agency or a reputable news outlet. See how we check stories.

Why is the news so negative?

Partly because we pay more attention to bad news. A 2019 study in PNAS across 17 countries found people react more strongly to negative headlines than positive ones. Sudden events also make news, while slow progress rarely does.

Is the world getting better or worse?

On many long-term measures, better. The share of people in extreme poverty fell from about 38% in 1990 to about 9% in 2019 (World Bank), and child deaths before age five fell from 93 to 37 per 1,000 births between 1990 and 2022 (UN IGME). Big problems remain, but progress is real.
